Default CIS Hockey: Official Hollywood Top 34

    THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 ~ 2010-11

Once again it is time to bring the hockey world the most authoritative ranking system in CIS hockey - THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34. Instead of doing a pre-season ranking I wait until there have been exhibition games and a smattering of regular season games as well. So here goes. You can also check on the CIS Standings and the CIS Composite Schedule.

The first step is to break it down conference by conference to minimize the "non-conforming" results. Here's the Canada West results so far:
    Code:
ALBERTA W: CC CAL REG SAS CAL CAL L: UNB
MANITOBA W: SAS BRO BRO L: REG MOO SCS UND
SASKATCHEWAN W: POR NAI REG CAL REG L: MAN ALT REG
LETHBRIDGE W: CAL CAL MRU DEN L: COL USA
REGINA W: POR MAN NAI SAS L: SAS ALT CAL SAS
UBC W: SAI SAI L: UNO MIN MSM
CALGARY W: REG L: LET LET UNB UNB ALT SAS ALT ALT
The only non-conforming result is Regina's win over Manitoba. This is a situation where Regina beat Manitoba, Sask beat Regina, and Manitoba beat Sask, meaning that one result had to be inconsistent with the rankings.

    Next is Ontario:
    Code:
    LAKEHEAD W: OTT OTT
UQTR W: CON STU ACA L: STU SFX ACA
MCGILL W: CAR CAR WAT UWO RMC
GUELPH W: BRO LAU BRO L: UNB PEI NOT
QUEEN'S W: OTT RMC YOR TOR L: RMU MER
RYERSON W: UOI YOR NIP L: WIN TOR
CARLTON L: MCG MCG SLU CLA
W.ONTARIO W: NIP LSS L: CON MCG CZE MIC
BROCK W: LAU YOR L: GUE GUE MAN MAN
YORK W: NIP TOR L: QUE RYE BRO NIA CAN
NIPISSING W: UOI L: UWO YOR RYE MT NMU
UOIT W: WIN WAT FER L: RYE NIP WMU
WATERLOO W: CON L: UOI MCG MIA
CONCORDIA W: UWO L: WAT UQT
WINDSOR W: CZE RYE L: UOI CZE UAF UAA
TORONTO W: RYE L: QUE YOR BU BC
LAURIER L: BRO GUE RIT BOW
OTTAWA W: RMC L: QUE LAK LAK
    RMC L: QUE OTT MCG
The non-conforming results here are Concordia over UWO, Windsor over Ryerson, and Toronto over Ryerson. Ryerson was odd in that their wins were over the better teams. They also have a regular season win. I don't know why Lakehead has only had two games.

    And, finally, here's the AUS:
    Code:
UNB W: CAL ALT CAL GUE SMU
                     UMA VER RIT
ST MARY'S W: DAL SFX PEI L: UNB PEI
ST F-X W: UQT ACA STU L: SMU UML T: UNH
ACADIA W: UQT DAL NEU L: UQT SFX DAL MAI
DALHOUSIE W: ACA MON L: SMU ACA
ST THOMAS W: UQT MON L: UQT SFX SHU QUI
MONCTON W: PEI L: STU DAL
PEI W: GUE SMU L: SMU MON
This had two non-conforming results, but both were parts of splits between SMU and PEI, and between Acadia and Dalhousie.

    INTERLOCKING GAMES

Th interlocking games between conferences assist greatly in comparing records across conferences. UNB creamed the Alberta teams, and did likewise to SMU. Brock was squashed by Manitoba and Guelph had a tight loss to PEI.

New Brunswick 10 at Calgary 2
UQTR 2 at St. Thomas 6
New Brunswick 6 at Alberta 2
UQTR 7 at St. Thomas 5
New Brunswick 6 at Calgary 1
UQTR 2 at St. Francis Xavier 4
Guelph 2 at New Brunswick 4
    UQTR 3 vs Acadia 4
    Brock 2 at Manitoba 6
    UQTR 5 at Acadia 1
Prince Edward Island 6 vs Guelph 5 (OT)
    Brock 1 at Manitoba 8

    COMBINED

The record I have noted is each team's record against CIS teams other than UNB, who are running roughshod over the competition. As the season progresses the intra-conference exhibition games will be dropped but the non-conference games against teams from the other conferences will be included, as will mid-season tournaments. Once more games are played I will also be able to break down the teams by grades A, B, C etc for better rankings.
    Code:
1 UNB 5-0 W: CAL ALT CAL GUE SMU
                             UMA VER RIT

    THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 ~ 2010-11

The most authoritative ranking system in CIS hockey - THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 - basically reaches the conclusion that the CIS is too tough to rank with a reasonable degree of accuracy at this stage.

Here are the links: Here are this week's results:
    • Oct. 14
      McGill 6 UQTR 2

      Oct. 15

And here are the rankings, first by conference:
    Code:

     7 LETHBRIDGE 0-0-2 0-0-0 2-0-0 2-2-0 4-2-0 (OTL Cal 2)
Alberta, as the only above .500 team, gets first for sure. Lethbridge is only technically at .500 because of the bonus points, so they get 7th. Calgary were man-handled by Alberta so they get 6th. UBC and Regina have shown they can eek out an upset on Friday night before getting trounced in the Saturday rematch, so they get 4th and 5th, with the nod going to Regina based on fact that they have maintained their record through 6 games now. Manitoba noses out Sask based on a pre-season win and had only 1 tight game against Regina in 2 attempts, not 3 of 4 as Sask has experienced.

McGill is clearly #!, since they are unbeaten in regular season and pre-season. Then you have Concordia, Ryerson, and Carlton who have taken turns beating each other for their only losses of the year. Then you have another troika. Waterloo beat Laurier, and Laurier has beaten better teams than has Queen's. The third troika (Urban Cowboys, Guelph, and UOIT) have also taken turns beating each other and have only wins vs teams below them and only losses with the teams above them. Then we have a quartet where Brock beat York who beat Windsor who beat Lakehead, so they all fall into line. Then we have the bottom feeders. Ottawa beat the Nips who beat UQTR who beat Toronto who, like Ryerson, beat nobody. So while all team end up falling nicely into place I would expect some shake-ups. Can Lakehead and UQTR be that bad?

     8 ST THOMAS 0-2-0 1-1-0 1-2-1 0-2-0 2-7-1 (L Monc UNB)
UNB's loss to UPEI threw a monkey-wrench into the AUS seedings. They were only 1-3 in conference exhibition games and then lost to Moncton. Moncton also beat the 'Pids but were also only 1-3 in conference exhibitions. So in the end I place St FX on top, with two wins against solid teams. UNB gets a reprieve. Moncton and UPEI deserve a bump. SMU beat Dal, and Acadia looked better than STU in defeat.

So putting it all together gives us this:

Really enjoy your hockey stuff, Hollywood. Thanks for all the effort you put into it.

(BTW, at the risk of sounding like a real PITA, its Carleton not Carlton.)

After a few more games we should be able to sort the teams by A, B, C, and D rankings, like last year. For now it is still necessary to sort the conferences then shuffle the conferences together like a deck of cards. Due to space constraints, I have dropped the conference and non-CIS exhibition results.

Here's how the conferences shake down:
    Code:
       Canada West
                    CONF CIS TOTAL
     1 ALBERTA 5-1-0 0-1-0 5-2-0 (W Calg-2 UBC Leth-2 L UBC)
     2 MANITOBA 2-1-1 2-0-0 4-1-1 (W Reg Sas L Reg OTL Sask)
     3 CALGARY 4-2-0 0-2-0 4-4-0 (W Leth-2 UBC-2 L Alta-2)
     4 SASK. 3-3-0 0-0-0 3-3-0 (W Reg-2 Man L Reg-2 Man)
     5 REGINA 3-3-0 0-0-0 3-3-0 (W Sas-2 Man L Sas-2 Man)
     6 UBC 1-2-1 0-0-0 1-2-1 (W Alta L Alta Cal OTL Cal)
     7 LETHBRIDGE 0-2-2 0-0-0 0-2-2 (L Alta-2 OTL Calg-2)
Though we are 3 weeks into the schedule, in a quirk the Man-Sask teams have played only one another while the BC-Alta teams have done likewise. In effect, this stops us from measuring one half of the conference against the other based on league play. It's like they are trying to bring back GPAC. Alberta scored 2 big wins so they clearly hang on to #1. I give Manitoba the nod over Calgary for having beaten Sask and because Calgary's 4 straight wins have all been very narrow. So Calgary basically jumps from #6 to #3 and the rest move down one.

    19 RMC 0-5-1 0-0-0 0-5-1 (L Carl Rye-2 McG UQTR OTL Ott)
In the OUA it is clear that the McGilligutties are @1, the Toronto Blahs are #18, and that RMC is #19. The rest of the rankings need explanation. It seems that there are numerous examples of A beat B who beat C who beat A. So I have ranked the teams on wins plus strength of schedule, measured by the number of wins achieved by each vanquished opponent. This basically weeded out the teams into 3 groups as listed. Concordia and Carleton are higher than anticipated and Lakehead and UQTR are lower. Lakehead has bounced back with 2 big wins over Guelph. But UQTR's only wins are over the winless!
    Code:
       AUS
                    CONF CIS TOTAL
     1 ST F-X 4-0-0 1-0-0 5-0-0 (W Acad SMU STU Monc)

     8 ST THOMAS 0-3-0 1-1-0 1-4-0 (L Monc UNB SFX)
UNB have bounced back from their stunning opening loss to UPEI. But St F-X are unbeaten and cannot be denied #1, for now at least. Moncton also came down to Earth in a week where the AUS was back to the pre-season form chart.

So, when blended together, here's what we've got:
    Code:

Next week I think I'll be able to go back to last year's system of evaluation by grading. For those who don't recall, or are new, I rank each team in the CIS by A, B, C, and D rankings (sometimes with sub-classes for + or - attached to a grade), I then contrast each team's record against each grading category. Right now the teams have not played enough of a variety of opponents, nor enough games, to tell who might be an A team or a B team, or a C team. Or, heaven forbid, a D team.

So for one last week I will do a conference-by-conference breakdown and then combine the results as best I can:
    Code:
       Canada West
                    CONF CIS TOTAL
     1 ALBERTA 7-1-0 0-1-0 7-2-0 (W Calg-4 UBC Leth-2 L UBC)
     2 MANITOBA 3-2-1 2-0-0 5-2-1 (W Reg Sas Leth L Reg Leth OTL Sask)
     3 CALGARY 4-3-1 0-2-0 4-5-1 (W Leth-2 UBC-2 L Alta-3 OTL Alta)
     4 SASK. 3-3-0 0-0-0 3-3-0 (W Reg-2 Man L Reg-2 Man)
     5 REGINA 4-4-0 0-0-0 4-4-0 (W Sas-2 Man UBC L Sas-2 Man UBC)
     6 UBC 2-3-1 0-0-0 2-3-1 (W Alta Reg L Alta Cal Reg OTL Cal)
     7 LETHBRIDGE 1-3-2 0-0-0 1-3-2 (W Man L Alta-2 L Man OTL Calg-2)
No changes in the CW rankings this week. Alberta is clearly #1 and the rest are really tight.

Once again, it is clear that the McGilligutties are #1. But it is equally clear that the Urban Cowboys are now #2. Carleton and Concordia both slipped this week with 2 losses apiece to the relative lowly. But they still remain a cut above the next group. Teams #5 to #11 can basically be placed in any order. The same with teams #12 to #18. Sadly, RMC remains alone at the bottom.

St F-X has stumbled and allowed UNB to reclaim their pre-season status predicted by the pundits. I don't think we'll see that ranking change. I also suspect that the ratings will shuffle consistently throughout the season. I wish that SMU had played more games.

So, when blended together, here's what we've got:

    THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 ~ 2010-11

Finally, the teams have played enough games so that I can sort the teams in a report-card like fashion into A, B, C, and D categories in week #6 of THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34. If you want to check things out to verify data, here are the links: This development means that I need not sort the teams first by conference and then try to blend the conference results.

    Here are last week's results:

For some special notes, I have to start with the AUS, and more specifically with St. F-X. They were formerly ranked #1 back when they were 4-0. They have now lost 4 straight, against 4 different teams. Perhaps charitably, I have left them as a B+ team for now. Conversely, UPEI jumps. They pounded St FX and this week's conquest of SMU, paired with their win over UNB, scores them a lot of points. For their part, SMU have played only 6 games (one against every AUS team but for STU). Their rating as an A level team may also be charitable. But they are defending national champions and were somewhat wobbly in last year's rankings most of the way. As for STU, it is hard to know where to rank the 'Pids. The AUS is a tough conference. But it is not just their record, it is their margin of defeat that makes me put them at D level.

In the CW, Alberta clearly warrant an A level ranking. Manitoba's convincing wins over Regina, though playing down 3 men, accentuate their strength. For now I am hesitant to bring anybody else into the A level. If Manitoba can sweep the mid-ranked CW teams while doing well against the upper level teams then a move could happen. The same could be said for Calgary. However, many have questioned their pedigree due to the closeness of some early results. Sask presents as a conundrum. Are they are contender with some early season struggles? Or are they a mid-ranked team destined to split a whole lot of series?

Turning to the OUA East, many in the official rankings are going ga-ga over McGill. I am not. Yes they are 10-0. However, the OUA East has been the weakest division in the CIS. And McGill has yet to play the 2nd and 3rd placed teams (Concordia and Carleton). Still, their margins of victory have been impressive. A weekend in the west followed by a weekend on the Atlantic seaboard would tell us where they really rank. Their ability to kick sand in the faces of 98-pound weaklings has been established. I need to see them beat some big boys. UQTR shocks me. Their 6-4 record covers up a really poor start. Two one-sided losses to McGill, and two losses to a 2nd year program from Nipissing, makes this more than a poor start.

Finally, the OUA West has severed into two packs: The Urban Cowboys by themselves in one whilst the other 8 are in a pack within spitting distance of .500. UWO has only lost once, and that was in OT. Based on strength of schedule, I have given them the edge over McGill. The division's other recent contenders (Lakehead, Laurier, and Waterloo) have all come back to the pack. The slipping of Lakehead shocks me. I would have bet that they would remain strong forever. Yet all they have done is split every weekend series. (They are the only side in the OUA which plays CW-style weekend double-headers.) The fact that Brock is 3-3-3 against these teams, and looked positively woeful by CW standards when they played Manitoba, forces me to conclude that none of the teams in this division, outside of UWO, are really close to being B level teams. So I have them at C+ or C level for now.

In the AUS, SMU had a nice weekend. However, not enough to move up. Last week I thought that their A level ranking may have been charitable. But this week's results justified my faith in them. Otherwise, Moncton goes up and, once again St FX falls. And St FX is no longer a B+ team.

There were no changes in the CW. Manitoba and Calgary had their expected split, Saskatchewan finally had a sweep, and the Evil Monkeys had the expected feast on Regina. One thing to keep an eye on is whether the CW will begin to separate into haves and have-nots and, if so, whether UBC, Regina, and Lethbridge could win enough games to stay/become B level teams.

In the OUA East, the Nippers' sweep of Carleton moves them up, and Carleton down. The question is how to mix and match this division against the OUA West. The coming weeks are filled with OUA interlock games and those will help us greatly. I predict that the official CIS rankings will once again over-rate McGill. Two more wins over Ryerson aren't going to move them up in my rankings. Are Carleton and Concordia really B level teams? Can UQTR return to form?

Finally, the OUA West had some shuffling. Laurier and Windsor are borderline C/C+ now. Lakehead scored a pair of wins, but over lower-ranked UOIT. So basically the division was stand-pat. After the Urban Cowboys the rest can all shuffle back and forth on a week to week basis.

This was a week where the big shake-ups came in the lower end of the B range and down. The OUA west pretty much dominated the OUA east in their first weekend of interlock. I have also added A-, B-, and C- categories. In the West, Regina falls behind Lethbridge and therefore falls from B to C. Waterloo and Lakehead jump from C to B, joining Concordia and Carleton in the newly minted B- category. I suspect Lethbridge may soon be joining them. BTW, Lakehead plays Concordia twice on the weekend.

At the top of the rankings there were losses all around, the exception being UPEI. While they only beat STU and Moncton they nevertheless never lost. Further down, St FX and UBC also had bumps with 4 point weeks.

     ---------------------------------------------------------
This was a funny little week. The OUA East won 11 of 18 interlocking gams against the OUA West. The Pids and RMC both won games. Anyhow, with the mid-terms upon us I have a general upgrading going on to even out the grading curve a little. Once some of the B+ teams can prove themselves over more games my guess is we'll see some more A level teams.

But unlike last year, UNB and Alberta cannot be considered A+ at this time. Both sides appear more vulnerable to more teams this year than last. I still have them a cut above, but at A level. SMU have not been able to truly dominate the B level so I have them at A- still. Only now they are joined by UPEI and Manitoba.

This week's results caused me to move McGill back up to #6. Their only demerit is an OTL to rising Brock whilst the Urban Cowboys have been downed by Toronto and RMC. A level teams don't lose to RMC. Calgary and Sask both split with C+ teams. For either to bump into A level they need a few sweeps of such series. Dal, Acadia, and St FX are solid B+ teams and can't be counted out.

So if McGill can jump to #6 why do they remain B+, you ask? It is their schedule. They were unimpressive with a one-goal win over lowly York and split a pair of OT games, losing to Brock and defeating Guelph. Hardly an A-level performance. And, they have played predominantly the bottom half of their division. They have 13 games left: 4 each with Carleton and Ottawa, 3 with Concordia, and 2 with UQTR. They are done with Nipissing, Toronto, Ryerson, Queen's and RMC.

Also, Concordia drops from B- to C+. They have slumped to #5 in the OUA East. 'Nuff said. I almost moved Lethbridge up from C+ to B-. They are at the top of C+ but their 10-1 loss to Saskatchewan dulled the impact of their split. Still, I could see a B rating for them in the new year. Their performance against UBC next weekend could help.

I surprised myself a bit with the degree of shuffling caused in what was a slightly abbreviated week of games.

First, the STU Pids were upgraded from D to C-. They have had a tough schedule. Everybody else in the AUS is either an A or a B. They also split a pair of games with UQTR in pre-season.

Second, Lethbridge and UQTR jump from C+ to B, which affects a lot of results in both of their conferences. Combined with a spate of losses by UBC, Moncton, Waterloo, and Carleton they also jump to the top of B level.

Otherwise, the top 5 stood pat, a few teams gained or lost a + sign, and St FX jumps ahead of Dalhousie with a head-to-head victory.

I hope to do a conference-by-conference breakdown over the break. Maybe even include a look ahead to see where the rankings might go. The big question is whether McGill can break through to A level. Lakehead and UQTR are finally putting together some wins. Lakehead's remaining schedule is tough enough that a good run could land them at A level. The Urban Cowboys could be there but that loss to RMC makes one shudder.

    Default 3-2-1 Point System

CIS STANDINGS ADJUSTED FOR 3-2-1 POINT SYSTEM

I admit that I was not a big fan of the shoot-out when it was introduced to the NHL. Especially after it had been tried and discontinued already in leagues like the MJHL and the original IHL. In recognition that a shoot-out loss was not a real loss, it was decided that a point should be awarded to the losing team for the tie they had earned. However, the corollary principle (that a win by shoot-out was not a real win) never made its way to the points formula.

In IIHF competition they have adopted the 3-2-1 point system whereby a regulation time win gives a team 3 points. In overtime or a shoot-out it is 2 points for the winner and 1 for the loser. I say: Good idea.

So how would that affect the CIS standings? I have compiled the results, and here they are, along with some observations on both the adjusted standings and also the GF/GA numbers:

    CANADA WEST
    Code:
GP W OW OL L GF GA PTS
    Alberta 14 10 1 1 2 64 38 33
    Manitoba 14 6 1 4 3 47 36 24
    Saskatchewan 14 5 3 0 6 48 34 21
    Calgary 14 3 4 2 5 36 36 19
    Lethbridge 14 4 2 3 5 48 61 19
    UBC 14 3 2 4 5 42 51 17
    Regina 16 5 1 0 10 34 63 17
    - Alberta and Manitoba are the only teams over .500 in regulation time
    - Saskatchewan's big edge in GF/GA comes from two games (9-1 over Regina and 10-1 over Lethbridge), otherwise they are 29-32, i.e. -3
    - the GAA of the top four is almost the same and then comes a HUGE gap
    - can Lethbridge bridge the GAA gap with Bowles back in the 2nd half?
    - can Saskatchewan stay unbeaten in OT/SO?

    AUS
    Code:
GP W OW OL L GF GA PTS
    UNB 15 11 0 0 4 61 27 33
    Saint Mary's 15 9 1 1 4 61 37 30
    UPEI 15 8 1 2 4 64 49 28
    StFX 15 7 1 1 6 53 54 24
    Acadia 15 7 0 2 6 52 55 23
    Dalhousie 15 2 6 0 7 44 57 18
    Moncton 15 4 1 2 8 46 57 16
    St. Thomas 15 1 1 3 10 38 83 8
    - Dalhousie is the CIS's biggest loser in the adjusted standings
    - Dalhousie is -13 in GF/GA
    - the AUS has the lowest ratio of OT games
    - the top 3 have an even bigger gap between themselves and the rest in the GF/GA ratio
    - the AUS is higher scoring than the CW this year, in goals-per-game the Evil Monkeys are still 1st but then UNB, SMU, UPEI, StFX, and Acadia are all ahead of the rest of the CW
    - only UNB and SMU have a GAA under 3.00

    OUA – East Division
    Code:
GP W OW OL L GF GA PTS
    McGill 18 14 2 2 0 103 44 48
    UQTR 17 8 4 0 5 70 56 32
    Carleton 17 9 1 2 5 59 43 31
    Nipissing 17 8 0 3 6 53 62 27
    Concordia 16 8 1 0 7 65 74 26
    Ottawa 17 5 4 2 6 68 68 25
    Ryerson 17 5 1 0 11 48 73 17
    Toronto 16 1 4 3 8 43 63 14
    Queen's 15 0 5 2 8 53 73 12
    RMC 16 0 1 1 14 38 87 3
    - the OUA-E had a big edge in head-to-head OT games with the OUA-W
in total the division is 23-15 in OT games
    - UQTR, Ottawa, Toronto, and Queen's are 4 of the CIS's top 7 biggest losers under the 3-2-1 point system
    - only 3 of 10 teams have outscored their opponents

    OUA - West Division
    Code:
GP W OW OL L GF GA PTS
    W. Ontario 16 12 1 3 0 79 42 41
    Lakehead 16 9 2 1 4 81 46 32
    Laurier 17 9 0 4 4 60 48 31
    Waterloo 17 7 4 0 6 58 58 29
    Guelph 16 7 1 2 6 60 55 25
    Brock 17 5 2 5 5 52 48 24
    Windsor 17 6 1 3 7 47 47 23
    UOIT 17 3 3 4 7 51 72 19
    York 17 5 0 0 12 35 64 15
    - Laurier's 0-4 in OT makes them the CIS's unluckiest OT team (Manitoba and Brock are right behind them)
    - when one considers the points adjustments and the GF/GA ratios, Waterloo gets knocked down as much as anybody in the CIS (basically tied with Dalhousie)
    - the OUA is even higher scoring than the AUS, with 9 of the top 15 teams in goals per game (and 5 from OUA-E)

At the top, UNB's sweep combined with Alberta's win-sol with UBC leaves the two teams in a dead-heat for top spot.

For the A- teams, UPEI beat Dal twice (once in exhibition) and were skunked by STU and Acadia. So they slip behind Manitoba, winners of 2 games over Lakehead.

In the B+, McGill did get hammered by UNB. But I get a sense that may happen to a lot of good teams in coming weeks. St FX gets credit for beating them in OT and two more conference wins. Otherwise, Calgary beat Lethbridge twice (once in exhibition) and Saskatchewan beat Regina twice. Put it all together and 6-9 are basically a dead heat with none able to stake claim to being at A level just yet.

At the bottom of B+, the Urban Cowboys lost to Laurier so they stay put. But Dal, Acadia, and Lakehead could be losing their + signs.

At the B level, UBC could be making a move if it weren't for their 1-3-4 record against B teams. They are an enigmatic team this year. Waterloo's loss to York is the last straw. They are now reclassified as C+.

Laurier's wins finally got them out of C+ and into the B level, where I expected they would be. This status change affected a lot of results in the OUA and those changes are reflected in the table. The rest of the C+ teams are in a dead heat.

The C teams shuffled a bit. UOIT could be making a claim to add a + sign. They have shown signs before, only to slide back. Early wins over UWO and Laurier were followed by a 4 game losing streak. They now have a 3 game winning streak. So I'll be checking in on them. There is not much to chose between the rest.

St. Thomas got a boost at C- due to win over UPEI. And, who knows, if RMC can win a few more maybe the D category will again be empty.

And, as a bonus feature, here are the results for all B+ and higher teams against A and B opponents from throughout the CIS:

At the top, Alberta's back-to-back splits against non-playoff teams moves them into #2 and allows UNB to jump to #1. The rest of the CW also split so it was a stand-pat weekend for them.

The AUS had a few twists after a few weeks of growing predictability. SMU could have jumped from A- to A if they beat Acadia. UPEI was on their way out of A- after losing badly to STU (and after having done so in a non-conference holiday game) but hung on with an OTL against UNB. Dal had a nice win over St FX but still lost their +. That's what four straight 4 and 5 goal losses will do. And Moncton needs to pick it up if they want to stay in B level. Their win over STU broke an 8 game losing streak.

Not much happened in the OUA East to alter things. Some might want to see Nipissing bumped into B level since they are on a 6 game winning streak. However, their last 4 wins come over Ryerson and RMC. They have two more games left against RMC, three with Toronto, and two with Queen's. They could run the table and still not budge!

In the OUA West, Waterloo gets back to B level after just getting bumped out last week. A little tough love from the OHT34 can really turn a program around! Lakehead dropped their + after being swept by the Urban Cowboys. Lakehead, Laurier, and Waterloo could all be jumbled in coming weeks. They all play primarily C teams to close (Lakehead and Waterloo finish against each other with a double-header and Laurier has one left with the Urban Cowboys).

One final note about UQTR and Lakehead. They are two OUA teams likely to be ranked in the top 10 in the official CIS poll. They both had horrible starts then pulled it together. However, recent results would indicate that they are both way more in-place at B level than at B+ level. Since Christmas, UQTR has close wins over Queen's and Concordia and were stomped by Ottawa. After being easily swept by Manitoba, Lakehead was convincingly swept by the Urban Cowboys.

I note that Carleton and Nipissing are very close at the edge of B- and C+. The difference now is that the Nippers have had so many games against RMC. Also, there is now a B- level.

The big change this week was the elimination of the B+ category as those teams moved into A. There has been a general tightening of the races in the CW and AUS. I had thought there would be more A level teams like last year but could never fully justify it before now.

The B teams are not an immediate candidate for promotion. Their records are somewhat deceptive. In goals for and against, Lethbridge is -14, UBC -18, Moncton -19, and Dalhousie -32.

I am not totally sold on Nipissing as a B level team. But they are 4-1-1 against B- teams.

I am replacing the usual commentary with a “who's hot, who's not” segment.

There was a lot of shuffling within the A level since Manitoba lost twice to Calgary, UPEI continue a slide, and McGill and the Urban Cowboys both suffered losses to lower teams.

The only team to switch letter grades was Waterloo, yet again, who drop from the Bs to the Cs where they sit in a big pile of OUA West teams.

I continue the “who's hot, who's not” segment:

    AUS:
    • Hot:
      UNB 10-1-0; Acadia 6-1-0; Saint Mary's 3-0-0; St F-X 4-1-0; Moncton 4-1-0

      Not:
      St Thomas 1-9-2; Dalhousie 1-4-0; UPEI 0-4-0
    Canada West:
    • Hot:
      Saskatchewan 8-1-0

      Not:
      UBC 0-4-0; Regina 1-5-2

    OUA – East:
    • Hot:
      Carleton 5-0-0; Nipissing 4-1-0

      Not:
      Ryerson 1-5-1; Ottawa 1-5-0

    OUA – West:

    • Hot:
      Guelph 4-0-0; UOIT 3-0-0; Brock 4-1-0

      Not:
      Waterloo 0-3-1; Windsor 0-3-1

X and SMU should be tied for 4th IMHO. X beat SMU twice in their last two meetings.

    Default Official Hollywood Top 34 - #16

    February 13, 2011

    THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 ~ 2010-11

The OUA and AUS have now concluded their regular seasons in time for THE OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 version #16. and Yet the CW has two weeks left. This presents a dilemma. Last year the official rankings closed once the OUA and AUS were in playoffs so that they gave StFX a boost ahead of Manitoba (after they beat UNB) but then never gave Manitoba a boost after beating Sask. This poll will therefore conclude the rankings of OUA and AUS teams. They will only move if a CW team either passes them or falls behind them. Here are the links: Here are last week's results:

So there is a good chance that whoever makes it out of the AUS will be favoured for a ring fitting although anything can and sometimes does happen in a one game playoff.

Since there were only 7 games the rankings did not change much. Lethbridge gets a B+ but could break through to the A's if they can win next weekend.

This marks the first time that there were no changes in the poll. All series in the CW were split, but Calgary got 3 points to win the weekend. Out east, the playoff results will be applied to the next playoff poll. But so far (as of Sunday morning) the only upset has been #24 Waterloo defeating #19 Lakehead. Hardly earth-shattering stuff.

A case could be made to bump Lethbridge into the A- category, aproximately level with UPEI. However I left them where they were. I would still have them at #12 regardless and I am troubled by the fact that they were outscored by their opponents during the regular season and were 0-2 in non-conference CIS games.

The big discrepancy between this and the official poll is that I have not rated the McGilligutties or Urban Cowboys too highly. The bottom line is that I simply cannot picture either side going .500 or better against A level teams over 10 games or so. They both had problems against a team like Brock, who were completely out-sized, out-hit, out-skated, and outclassed by the Bisons in non-conference play. So much so, in fact, that I would fear for their safety if they had to play a full season against CW teams. So I had the McGilligutties and Urban Cowboys as high as I could, at #8 and #9. And since they were well above the rest of their divisions everything is adjusted accordingly. I really don't see how any follower of CIS hockey could have UQTR and Carleton in the top 10.
