Also, you have to remember that for a lot of these guys they won't make it to their second contract, so they have to try and save for post-football life.

40k a year isn't bad (not great but not bad) for a job you can work at for 30-40 years. If you only last the length of your first contract, say 120k before taxes (i lost half of my income to taxes/health/ect.) and 70k after, that's <25k a year so they don't really have any extra cash once they're done.
