This is interesting.
This article in The Record is about OFSSA - the Ontario high school athletics organization - allowing girls to play on boys teams - specifically, allowing Courtney Greer to play on the boys soccer team at SJAM after a threat to go to the Ontario HRT.
What I find interesting is the comments about the purpose of high schools sports by the OFSSA president.
and from the Manitoba High School Athletic Association executive director:“This particular decision to change the policy ... really goes against what the organization is founded upon, which is education through sport,” said Gellatly.
“Courtney’s objectives are to develop as an athlete and move on to higher levels and that really doesn’t in any way fit in with the objectives of school sport or OFSAA.”
a) Do you agree with these descriptions of the purpose of high school sports?“If you want to become an elite athlete, you join a club. High school is not about elite development, it’s about giving kids a chance to play.”
b) Should high schools be unconcerned with whether their kids get to develop to be at a high level when they leave?
c) Should high schools be unconcerned with whether their kids can earn athletic scholarships when they leave?
d) Is it different for Canadian universities and their attitude towards sports? Why/why not?
