From the understanding I've gleaned from some people closer to the situation, the decision to go with Rogers had to do with the idea that their multiple regional platforms would be used for other, non-FB, varsity sports. The idea was that TSN wasn't excited about anything but the football product, whereas SN talked a good game about expanding the Canadian university brand. Something changed (I think most assume it was the acquisition of the NHL), as did whatever commitments Rogers made to the school bosses.

It is rear-view mirror material now.
