Hmmm.....
So, why is this better than Martlets?
or Red Martlets?
Is "bird" a dumbed down "Martlet" ?
I suppose it could have been worse

When people hear red bird they usually think of Cardinals----the birds, not the red robed prelates in the Vatican.
Picked up this trivia on the net.
The red bird symbolizes lessons of distinctiveness, staying true to ourselves, and recognizing our place and the power we have within ourselves. A cardinal's spiritual meaning is one of a fight against insecurities.
They should have just taken up 'Yardbirds' if they really wanted to emphasise 'birds' part of it.
Alright, let's name the Red Generics
Neither the first nor the last bland thing that will come out of political correctness. Bury a (tainted) tradition and replace it with nothing.
Hard to get pissed at nothing of substance.
I'm not exactly sure why people hate the name. It is as good as any name.
Right but that's the complaint.
Instead of seizing the opportunity to choose a distinctive name like Martlets ... they chose RedBirds.
Nothing wrong with it (and its better than York University, which deliberately chose... Lions) but its still a missed opportunity.
(Having said that - it does occur to me that maybe there was resistance to the men's teams "taking" the women's nickname)
(note for those not into trademarks and branding - its generally better to chose a trademark that is distinctive - i.e. that no one else is using or close to it and stands out in a crowd - so that you can then build a distinctive brand. Gee-Gees, Queen's all-gold uniforms, are good marks/branding)
I was all for moving all teams to the Martlet umbrella, oh well at least they went off the conference board and didn't just settle on the Red and White.
I guess having no feet, they had their heads stuck in the clouds.
Apparently Red Bird....isn't such a hot choice that could be the next complaint....that lack of a space is critical Redbird.
In fact, you're quite wrong considering they changed the name cause of a complaint in regards to Native people allusion. The new one is worst than «Redmen» :

It is a pretty big stretch to think they're alluding to this figure in any way.
A better link would be: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redbird
Pretty big strech indeed, but someone will probably file a complaint; each minute reason is good to file one according to some.
Look at the marketing positives!
