A shame ND didn't end up in the Texas bowl I was looking forward to watching Rice absolutely pummel them. ND has no business even in a bowl game. It's all about the money but if you can't finish at 7-5 I don't think you deserve to be in a Bowl.
At first glance looks like a tough schedule for the Big 10 teams.

Interesting to see Danny Barrett coaching back in Canada. He's the head coach of the Buffalo Bulls who are playing in Toronto at the International Bowl. Anyone going to that game? If I were in Toronto that day I would probably go see it.

Other than Ohio State, I'm a Big10 fan. I go to see Michigan play a game or 2 a year. The past couple of years have definitely been down years for the Big 10.
I gotta say, even if you're not a Michigan fan, it's odd not seeing them playing in Dec or Jan

Tell me that 5-6 bowl games is not better than this load of crap that they throw at us every year and then all these clowns buy the hype that they actually mean something?
Rose, Orange, Sugar, Cotton, Sun and Gator Bowl and that's it. New Years day was actually something years ago when you watched bowls games and good teams were in them......now 34 bowls and it has become a total joke!

Ok but even in the 80s when us in Canada would get 7 or 8 games broadcast on CBS, ABC and NBC New Years Day they still had 25-30 bowl games that just didn't get the broadcasting that ESPN has done. There is still only 5-8 major bowl games that feature top teams. Just you have to wait out the minor and middle level bowls that are now on TV.
I also agree that 34 bowl games is likely too many however since I love watching football and they have spread the schedule out (very little overlap at all) so it is possible to watch all 34 games I'll take it. And at the end of the day these games do mean something. They mean 15 extra practices and a payout for going to the bowl.
The Senior Bowl and the East West Shrine Game are tedious games but I'll watch them too. If I could catch the other 4 college all star games on TV I'd probably watch them too even though all 6 of them are merely exhibitions that players try to shine without getting hurt.
Which brings up the question that why doesn't the CIS try to get players into the other All Star games? I mean we probably could put 6 to 10 players into some of the other games and put them in front of the same scouts as the Shrine Game but for some reason they only try to get the Shrine Bowl to accept them.

Dr. Evil,
I respectfully disagree! There are 34 bowl games, with 68 teams participating. Bowl teams are required to have a bowl qualifying minimum of six wins, which means there are no teams with losing records in a bowl.
There are 119 teams in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision with no play-off system. The bowl games are set up as a reward for a team's successful season. If there is no play-off system (another debate) to reward a teams hard work, the bowls are a great alternative. If there were only 5-6 bowls, only 12 teams would be rewarded and the other 107 teams would sit at home.
The bowls also allow fans to see match-ups that they would not otherwise see throughout the regular season.
Is alot of it about money .... sure it is. But 68 teams qualifying out of 119 teams is 57%. I assume your argument is that the bowls are watered down. But if you consider the CIS playoff ..... I believe there are 26 teams with 16 making the play-offs? Thats 61% of the teams making the playoffs.
I understand your sentiment, but I tend to look at it from the perspective of the coaches and the players and if we had a successful season, I want to play in a bowl.

34 bowl games is a joke and bottom line is you bought the Hype that these 34 games actually mean something. I mean if you win the Meineke Bowl do you get a ring and a free bottle of car wax?
Your arguement might have some merit if this 57% of teams represented some type of playoff system.....but they don't.....it the College football version of the "participation ribbon". Everybody gets a ribbon for showing up....in this case you're a mediocre team so you go to a bowl game to feel good about yourself.

The Meineke Car Care Bowl participants picked up a million dollars each plus the chance to be on national TV which UNC didn't get this year. Last year's Car Care Bowl drew 3.6 million viewers. Plus the conference covers your travel costs.
If there was no benefit for playing in the bowls many schools would opt out. Without the payout, travel costs covered, additional practice time and the chance at a game on national TV I believe we would drop to 10 or so big bowl games with perhaps some regional games. Schools would be idiotic to refuse a million dollars or more.
You can laugh at the 6-6 records but Mount Allison made the CIS playoffs with a 2-6 record, while Ottawa, Guelph and McMaster were all 4-4.
I guess I'm just not sure why any football fan would be so against more football being played? Just doesn't make sense to me.

I didn't buy any hype. I'll watch the games that are of interest to me and I won't watch the games I have no interest in. I married into a family of Carolina fans, so the Meineke bowl was of particular interest. UNC is a program on the rise and losing to West Virginia, even though it was a disappointment, it was a good indication that the program is on the right track. BTW, Bank of America Stadium was sold out at 73,000 fans.

My arguement has alot of merit! :D As I stated before, the Bowl Championship Subdivision does not have a playoff system, so the bowls are a reward to coaches and players who put in an incredible amount of work over a 12 game season. And yes there are a few 6-6 teams, but at least they don't have lsoing records! Personally, I think a 2-4 record makes a mockery of a play-off system.

Are you guys listening......you guys bought the hype of the America media that these bowl games mean anything. They don't mean jack! So the school gets a million dollars....I am sure that will help with tuition. Tell exactly how the Meinke bowl meant anything more that any other game that either of those teams played this year? What exactly did it mean?
A reward...yes going to Boise Idaho or Detroit in winter is a great reward!!!! You guys sit there and say this is such a great thing....why?....because ESPN told you it was. So the New Orleans bowl Troy vs South Miss....Troy had a great season....check their schedule out wow that's an impressive collection of teams. .....But it's a BOWL GAME.....SO C'MON SHEEP WATCH!
Take a look at this website and at some of these "successfull" 6-6 or 7-5 teams and who they played and how they PAD their "successfull" years

I watch probably 400 or more football games a year so I guess I'm a sheep for watching 34 more games during the Christmas break.
Bowl games were started as exhibitions pitting conferences against each other. So what did the Meineke Car Care Bowl mean? Well it meant bragging rights for the Big East over the ACC. All year long here on Dot Org we have the cycle of debates about what CIS conference is the best, which one is the easiest, and so on. So this answers some of that. The Mountain West had the best bowl record last year and earned another chunk of cash for their conference which will pay travel costs for teams this year heading to bowl games.
When we get to the Sugar Bowl each school gets $17 million dollars. How would you like that added to your school football program. If the average full ride football scholarship is worth $35,000 that turns into 485 scholarships. So that one game takes care of scholarships for the next 5 years. No big deal I guess. The 1 million that West Virginia picked up for heading to Charlotte should take care of 28 and a half scholarships for next year. Perhaps that replaces Pat White should they find the right prospect.
So Dr. Evil are you really more against the NCAA, the American media/hype or the American TV networks when it comes to the bowl games? Or are you just really pro-playoff system? I honestly want to know because it doesn't make sense to me since I believe that you are a true football fan.

Dr. Evil,
whatever dude ...........
I'm settling in to watch LSU vs Georgia Tech in the Chik-Fil-A Bowl. I guess you can say I've bought into the 'hype' of wanting to watch a 'mediocre' 7-5 LSU team take on the 9-3 Ramblin' Wreck. But guess what, I'm excited about it! Its ACC vs SEC. It's GT's option offense vs LSU's speed. Bottom line .... its good football.
BTW, your website predicts how the 2008 season will turn out. The season is already over bud ...... why would I want to look at predictions?

So I take from that that you are against the NCAA and the hype it generates.
Personally I wish the CIS bowls could generate the interest, attendance and television coverage that the counterparts down south do. I wish that the Mitchell Bowl had a major sponsor that could reward Western and Saint Mary's for reaching that game. Even down to the conference level we all complained when the OUA's dollar amounts were posted regarding the amount of money that was allowed to be spent on advertising and how it wasn't even close to helping grow our game. (what was it $2500?)
If Laval has the largest CIS budget coming in around $2 million then a major sponsor for the Uteck Bowl could've plugged in a chunk of that for next year. Think that school ADs would push the programs a little harder if they could see money coming back into their programs? Right now I don't see many programs paying for themselves and this is a route to doing that. So why not?
